Oh glorious news! It seems like director Juan Antonio Bayonna (The Orphanage) has been tapped to direct ‘Hater’ for Universal. Why am I so excited? Because, after Guillermo del Toro, Bayonna is one of the up-and-coming directors to watch. The Orphanage was a masterpiece, and almost as powerful as Pan’s Labyrinth on a much smaller scale. And, the good news doesn’t stop there. Read on for more.

Shiver aka Escalofrío (2008)

Shiver, aka Escalofrío to the non-Spanish speakers (or at least that’s what they say on IMDB) is a rather interesting film. The premise is simple enough, but is only brought to light as the layers of the story are pealed back, leading to a satisfying, if not unpredictable finale. The first thing that caught my attention is that Shiver is from the producer of Pan’s Labyrinth and The Orphanage (two of my favorite films of the decade), and I know that this is usually just a marketing ploy, but I had to find out for myself. I found myself put off at first, but by the end of the film, thoroughly caught up in the story. To say the least Escalofrío is a roller-coaster ride that puts the audience through a series of highs and lows and some nice unexpected twists.

Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆
