‘Bonnie and Clyde’ to be Bastardized
That’s right folks, just when you thought that the remake craze was dying down, the studios go ahead and toss another film under the remake bus. And, not only is it bad enough that they’re remaking a great flick, but they’re bringing in teen idols to drag in an entire audience of moronic kids that don’t get what made the original so amazing. Tsui Hark Calls on “Detective Dee”
Director Tsui Hark has a new film in the works, “Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame” which is being called a period martial arts suspense thriller. It’s going to feature Andy Lau and begins production this may in Hong Kong and China.
‘War Monkeys’ in the Works
Well, I haven’t actually had my attention grabbed by news in a while, but I just couldn’t resist finding out what was going on with this after I read the title. Well, it appears I had good reason to show interest. In what could be one of the most ridiculous sounding films I’ve heard of in a while, Dark Horse Films is working on a story, so awesome, that it’s awesomeness must be moved to after the break.

It’s been running rampant through the news the last week, but with ‘Quantum of Solace’ about to drop on Friday, it’s looking like the numbers could be bigger than expected for the 22nd James Bond flick. I, for one, am uber-excited as Casino Royale is one of my favorite Bond films, and Daniel Craig is an amazing actor. ‘Conan’ First on Ratner’s Plate
OK. I’ll come out and say it. I’ve never been a huge fan of Brett Ratner. The truth is the guy hasn’t exactly worked on films I’ve liked the idea of anyway (The Rush Hour series bores the piss out of me), but I’d love to see him direct a film I actually have hopes for. Anchor Bay is ‘Out’
Anchor Bay has just snagged the rights for a Kim Basinger lead thriller entitled ’While She was Out’. Anchor Bay, as any horror fan, isn’t exactly known for it’s theatrical releases. Almost every title they’ve put out in the genre has gone DTV. But, the Bay has distributed three films already in theaters this year. ‘Gods’ Vs. ‘Titans’
Looks like the studios are taking the remake craze to a whole new level. Now, two major studios are creatiing remakes to two of the biggest classic fantasy films ever, and they’re racing to get out at the same time to compete. What the hell? Anyone ever heard of taking their time to make the best film possible. Not these guys I guess. Read on for the films, the players and all the other stuff.
‘Trap’ set for Aldrich
Matthew Aldrich has been brought on to write ‘The Trap’ for Alcon Entertainment. Guess what? Yup, it’s another remake. And, once again, it’s a foreign film that’s not even a year old. I know that studios like to pick films that have a sure-fire (or at least they think) way of making money, but how does remaking a film that maybe 20 people in America have seen translate into more sales then creating something from scratch? I’ll never understand this. There’s plenty of films from over 50 years ago that have a solid cult fan base and could use a good once over (leave the classics alone, thought). Read on for details.
‘Forbidden Planet’ home of ‘Changeling’ Writer
J. Michael Straczynski is set to write the remake of the sci fi classic ‘Forbidden Planet’ for Warner Bros. The rights have been jumping all over the place and it seems to have found it’s home with the WB. The original is such an amazing film, I’m really having my doubts that this will even capture part of the essence from the original. But, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t pumped to see what they do with Robbie the Robot in the newer version. Read on for more info.
‘Preacher’ for Columbia
More news to tease me with. The epic series called ‘Preacher’ about a semi-possessed priest, searching for God and traveling with a group of unlikely allies may be coming to a big screen soon. And, this is the third or fourth time I’ve been promised some sort of adaption. I don’t know what the deal is, but somehow everytime something is set up with the adaption it falls through. WB Bringing on the Next Franchise Spy Flick?
You know how there’s that kick-ass spy series, James Bond? Have you heard of that trilogy (soon to be expanded upon) featuring a dude named Bourne? Well, grab a rolled up magazine and stir that martini some more, because Warner Bros. has just picked up a still unreleased spy novel to be turned into their next big feature film. What’s the story? ‘Divorce’ at Miramax
When I started reading the article about ‘Adult Children of Divorce’ I was all ready for another “intense” diagnosis of divorce from a made-for-television film, probably starring any of 5 rotating former hit leading ladies, who have made the change over to Lifetime films, but I was wrong. The film is coming from a reliable source who delivers laughs almost nightly, and the premise could turn out to be the comedy that ‘Step Brothers’ wasn’t. Read on for more information.
Carell enlists for ‘Brigadier Gerard’
Steve Carell is just one of those guys that can make me laugh no matter what he’s in. Even if those around him flounder and don’t do a great job, Carell manages to elicit laughs that are not forced or for the wrong reasons. I’ve always been interested in seeing whatever the man’s got up his sleeves next (Although I haven’t seen ‘Get Smart’ yet). Kermit has a case of ‘Happytime Murders’
Everyone knows Jim Henson Co. is responsible for the lovely kids show featuring Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear. We’ve all spent untold amounts of hours watching a bunch of puppets talking about nothing, and enjoying every minute of it. It seems that Henson has another banner under its umbrella for more “non child-friendly fair” and its next project will definitely fall under that theme. Read on for the buzz.
A Downed Economy can’t stop Gekko
Seems that the super-intellegent folks over at Fox continue to make all the right moves. This time, in the middle of a spiraling economy, they decided the best thing to do would be to greenlight a sequel to the Oliver Stone’s ‘Wall Street’. Now, I’m all for continuing on a great story, but, come on, ‘Wall Street’ was a stand alone film, and who in their right mind is going to pay to watch a film about rich guys during times like these? I know there’s more to it than that, but is anyone going to see past the millions of imaginary dollars changing hands? I wouldn’t. Cheadle joins ‘Iron Man 2′
It seems that Terrence Howard’s time in the Iron Man universe ended a bit prematurely. Sadly, he is not going to appear in the second film, but Don Cheadle will be taking his place. The character of Jim Rodes is an important one as he is Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) best friend and eventually becomes War Machine. I enjoyed Howard’s performance, but I’d have to say at times he felt a bit flat. Let’s see if the Oscar-nominated Cheadle can give Rodes a bit more life. Read on for more.
Cronenberg Stalking ‘Matarese Circle’
OK. I know I posted something, somewhere about this upcoming film before, but I’m not going to wade through pages of articles to link it. The short of that article was, one of the best modern actors, Denzel Washington, is set to star in an upcoming thriller entitled ‘Matarese Circle’. The story sounds interesting, but was really Denzel hopping on board that peaked my interest. Well, cinemaphiles rejoice, we have another reason to get our butts in the chairs. David Cronenberg (Videodrome, The Fly, Eastern Promises) is in talks to direct the film, and if you don’t know who Cronenberg is…I don’t know how to help you. Read on for more info.
Hathaway to be in ‘Alice’
It looks like one of the hotties that came out of the kids film market is on her way back into Disney’s arms. Anne Hathaway has signed on to play a large role in the upcoming Burton-directed ‘Alice.’ For those who don’t know ‘Alice’ is an adaption of ‘Alice in Wonderland’. The rest of the cast has shaped up quite nicely and it looks like big names are attached all over this project. Read on for more casting info.
