The Cremator (1969) – DVD Review

So, I just finished watching The Cremator, aka Spalovac mrtvol, and boy, that was not what I was expecting at all. After wandering online a bit, I was lead to believe that I was going to be watching a very dark comedy, or at least something so ridiculous that I would find humor in it. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. The Cremator is a very slow decent into the mind of a man who thinks he’s freeing the souls from those that he cremates and, in turn, allows them to be reincarnated as something better. Of course, all of this is set against the backdrop of World War II and Hitler’s rise to power (now, please tell me where the humor is in that?).

The Centerfold Girls (1974) – DVD Review

Boobs, gore, boobs, murders, boobs, Andrew Prine, boobs, 70s deco…oh, and did I mention boobs. These are the things that go into The Centerfold Girls, and as an exploitation flick, this movie doesn’t disappoint. A psycho killing off centerfold models may sound a bit overdone, but there’s something about The Centerfold Girls that entertained me to no end.

Island Fury (1983) – DVD Review
Kidnapping, torture, beatings, shotguns, meat clevers, nudity, terrible dialogue, Texas Chainsaw Massacre-rip-offs, a little Tarzan-like dude, and some random close-up shots of cockroaches: how can you go wrong? Well, Island Fury managed to be both strangely entertaining, and still failed at the same time. I mean, come on now, the other title for this flick is Please Don’t Eat the Babies. What this had anything to do with the film is beyond me, but I’m sure it helped sell some seats when this thing originally came out.

Barracuda (1978) – DVD Review
When you make a film called Barracuda make sure you have the damned animal in it more than a handful of times. For a flick with a kick ass, pissed-off looking demon fish on the cover there sure wasn’t a lot of the aforementioned beast. In fact, after the halfway point I’m hard pressed to think of more than twice that they make an appearance (even though the first half would lead many to believe that there was the potential for some fun feeding frenzies). What a tease.

Dead of Night (1977) – DVD Review
Once in awhile a horror anthology offers something different then a straight, feature-length film. This time I checked out Dead of Night. Well, it’s a rather mixed bag, bringing together several different styles of story-telling (one that’s not horror as much as fantasy) and doesn’t even bother trying to tie them together (like, say, Tales from the Crypt).

Madhouse (1981) – DVD Review

Many times I’ve spoken about the giallo film, and how entertaining they can be to watch. Be it from Argento, Bava, Martino or any of the myriad of other directors who have entertained us fans through the years, there’s many things that tend to stand out in these sorts of films. The mystery, the motive, the unknown murderer and hot women are pretty much staples (though they’re not all always there), but, as with any genre, you’ll be sure to come across a few hybrids that try to mix outside styles with the staples of what works so well within the genres boundaries. Sometimes they’re horrible. Sometimes they’re very good. Madhouse, aka There Was a Little Girl, falls somewhere in the middle.
