Monsters Inc. to get sequel…

Looks like Disney is goin to hop on the sequel train…I just hope they do it right.

Not surprisingly, considering how much cabbage it made not only theatrically but on home video, Pixar’s “Monster’s Inc” is planting a sequel seed.

At the licensing fair in Las Vegas, Disney/Pixar revealed (albeit behind closed doors to buyers only) that original director Pete Docter (“Up”) will return to helm a sequel to the 2001 flick. The original garnered a sweet $62 million on its initial opening weekend in the states.

Despite their original plan to mainly produce original content, the House of Mouse seem to be well and truly on the sequel train now. In addition to “Monsters Inc 2”, they’ve also got sequels to “Toy Story” and “Cars” on their books.

Jim Hill Media, who had the “Monster’s Inc” scoop, also reports that Disney has pushed back Uncle Jerry’s fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, starring Johnny Depp, to 2012 (it was originally earmarked for 2011). By the sounds of it, Bruckheimer and company are putting all their energy into the “Lone Ranger” remake – also starring Johnny Depp – before rebooting their systems for the “Caribbean” sequel. Its OK mate, we’re in no rush – or I aren’t anyway.

As long as Goodman and Crystal star in it, I am for it.  Disney has this knack for doing direct-to-video sequels that do not feature the beef of the original cast.  If Goodman/Crystal do not BOTH agree to do it…SQUASH IT!  Toy Story 2 is great because the original cast returned.  Same goes for CARS.  As for Pirates getting pushed back…Meh.  Wasn’t a huge fan of the third flick.  I believe this flick will be centered around Jack Sparrow and will not have Bloom or Knightley(correct me if I am wrong, please).  In any event, Monsters Inc. is set to hit Blu Ray this fall.
