OK. I know I posted something, somewhere about this upcoming film before, but I’m not going to wade through pages of articles to link it. The short of that article was, one of the best modern actors, Denzel Washington, is set to star in an upcoming thriller entitled ‘Matarese Circle’. The story sounds interesting, but was really Denzel hopping on board that peaked my interest. Well, cinemaphiles rejoice, we have another reason to get our butts in the chairs. David Cronenberg (Videodrome, The Fly, Eastern Promises) is in talks to direct the film, and if you don’t know who Cronenberg is…I don’t know how to help you. Read on for more info.

The veteran writer-director — who jumped from ICM to Endeavor last week — is negotiating to helm “The Matarese Circle,” a political thriller and potential franchise generator for MGM. Denzel Washington is attached to star in the project, which is derived from a Robert Ludlum conspiracy novel.

In the 1979 book, two rival intelligence agents — one American, one Soviet — find themselves working together to ferret out and vanquish members of a mysterious group of criminals called the Matarese that has infiltrated the highest levels of American government. Ludlum published a sequel to “Circle,” “The Matarese Countdown,” in 1997, but the studio did not acquire the rights to it.

A book from Ludlum, written and directed by Cronenberg and starring Washington. I really can’t think of what else they need to sell me to get my money.
