Oh no. It seems that George Romero is going to be continuing on with the story set up in the 5th in his ‘living dead’ films. Did you not learn anything the first go around, George? Rumors have been circulating that the film has already begun, and these are not true, say Bloody-Disgusting. But, the film is set to start shooting next month. Read on for more ghoulish info on a film that needs to kick it up a notch to restore Romero to his glory days.
The “diary” saga continues. Our heroes, trapped in the mansion where we left them, battle waves of ravenous zombies, barely escaping alive. In search of a safe place to settle, they commandeer an abandoned ferry and sail to a deserted island, only to find that it is already populated by a civilization of the dead. Told in the same first-person style that distinguished “George A. Romero’s Diary of the Dead”, the next episode of the saga is a violent siege set in the middle of nowhere, a desperate struggle for survival, and peace, between two tribes: the living and the living dead. DIARY marks Romero’s sixth entry in his horror franchise.
Dawn of the Dead ‘78 is one of my all-time favorite horror films. Here’s to hoping Romero can capture the magic he held in the late-60’s and 70’s, and even managed to finagle out in the 80’s as well.

Diary started out really well. I loved the opening news report, and felt that Romero was ready to knock the film out of the park. Everything, sadly, went down hill from there. The problem with the film was that it just wasn’t nearly as unique as it needed to be. It was well trodden ground, things we’ve seen numerous times before.
I hope he does something different. Throw some stuff our way Romero, and that includes some innovative kills.

And throw in subtext that isn’t beaten over our head ala Land.

Night and Dawn are such amazing films, but Day just let me down. I initially felt the film to be slow and not nearly as “important” as the previous two dead films.
I now see it as nearly as good as the first two. It’s still not my favorite in the series, but it does hold quite a bit of merit. I still don’t completely agree with the idea of Bub the zombie but I can deal with it. To be honest, I think it’s Rhodes’ “CHOKE ON ‘EM!” scene that really makes this film work for me.

Rhodes’ scene is classic!

Aug 19, 2008 at 7:06 pm -I honestly fell asleep the first time I saw Dawn. I watched Dawn on VHS when I was about 15 or so. It was the first true zombie film I had seen. Aside from the tenement scene, I didn’t much care for it.
A little while later, I watched Night Of The Living Dead. I really liked the film, and I figured I’d give Dawn another try. I was a true Romero believer from that point on. I actually payed attention to the story, the subtext, the pure genius of it.
I picked up that Ultimate DVD set a little while back and I couldn’t be happier with it. It’s still to this day, my favorite zombie film. Hell, one of our cats is named Romero.
So what the hell does all of this have to do with Diary Of The Dead 2? Absolutely nothing…..

I’m evil. :p
Mr. Vindictive, pretty much same thing happened to me. Except the first time I saw Dawn was AFTER Night. Then I rewatched it and BAM! loved it.
What does it have to do with Diary 2? It’s what we’re hoping will be a return to form for the old man

My main problem is I don’t think the comedy works at all, and the blue-face zombies are everything EXCEPT frightning. I still want to see Argento’s edit of the film, so who knows, that one might finally open my eyes to it.
I like the remake though, way better than the original…won’t hear those words come out of my mouth too often
As for Diary 2, I’ll check it out. The cheese factor worked for me in the first, so Diary 2 doesn’t even need to be better for me to like it…it just needs to be as cheesy!!

Aug 19, 2008 at 7:26 pm -I’m sorry to hear that buddy :p I didn’t take any comedy in the film seriously (as comedy) just as lines that regular people would say to lighten the mood. I’d say some pretty unfunny lines to get a nervous chuckle out of people if zombies were attacking. It wasn’t the zombies themselves but the impending doom that made the film so terrifying.
FAIL. Even though I really enjoy the remake.
Of course I’ll be watching it. I just won’t hold my breath.

Yeah that’s exactly how I take it.
Why am I agreeing with you again?! Twice in one hour!

Aug 19, 2008 at 7:39 pm -Dude, the bikers come and start hitting zombies in the face with pies…I still cringe thinking about the absurdity of that and what it had to do with ANYTHING! That was pretty much the final nail in the coffin for me.

Aug 19, 2008 at 7:40 pm -No, Kamui they were overconfident that’s what that showed. I bought the pies in the face because if you watch any bullies with their victims, they taunt them and abuse them, that’s what they were doing. They were SO SURE that they wouldn’t get hurt, because the zombies were slow, that it doesn’t occur to them that their lives are on the line everytime they do that.

Aug 19, 2008 at 9:19 pm -I really dislike the original Dawn. Argento’s cut is much, much better (because he is a much, much better director) but even still, it is my least favorite of the original trilogy (Land and Diary are just pure shit).
Night will always be my favorite, and deserves the classic status it holds. Day is my second favorite of the films, tied with Night but for completely different reasons.

I’ll definitely have to make time to check out Argento’s cut now. It’s my last chance to really get something out of the film.

Aug 20, 2008 at 9:02 am -The on BIG difference you will notice almost immediately is the fact that Argento cuts the film to an action film of sorts, removing out all the crap-ass social commentary that was supposed to be so profound in Romero’s version (wow, we are greedy, wow, we like to buy shit) and focus more on the predicament itself. He also removes all the stock music Romero used and replaced it with more Goblin (yay!).
Some gore is removed, and some of the zombie footage is cut shorter. All comedic portions that I thought failed miserably, even when I saw the film for the first time, are gone as well.
In other words, everything I couldn’t stand about the original is gone. But even then, it still isn’t better than Night or Day, it just makes it a hell of a lot better, IMO, than Romero’s cut.
