Del Toro is not ‘Afraid of the Dark’

Guillermo del Toro is easily my favorite (or tied for my favorite) modern director. He has a wicked eye for beauty and his story-telling is unparalleled. And now he’s doing a remake. Calm yourselves. I know, I know. Remakes are the devil, but this could be the first good remake since The Ring. Del Toro will not be directing, but he’ll be producing (along with Miramax – shudder). Comic book artist Troy Nixey will be directing, but you can rest assured del Toro will have a hand in the overall look of the film. Read on for why I’m so pumped.
“Dark” centers on a young girl, sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend, who discovers sinister creatures that live underneath the stairs.
If you read that and can’t see how del Toro got involved, you haven’t been to the theaters in the last 3 years.
Nixey is one of several emerging filmmakers, including “Orphanage” helmer Juan Antonio Bayona, mentored by del Toro.
Now, it just got better. Orphanage was a slam-dunk and one of the most atmospheric modern films I’ve seen. If del Toro can mold Nixey to have the same chops as Bayona, then we’re in for a treat.

Oh cool…the original Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is highly revered, although I finally saw it a couple months ago and was really underwhelmed. It’s completely dated and I don’t understand all the praise from the people that saw it all those years ago. I guess maybe it’s one of those deals where “you had to be there”. It came off to me like a ’70’s version of Puppet Master, not the scary masterpiece so many people have made it out to be.
But with Del Toro involved, this subject matter could be pretty cool.
Have not seen the original, but I’ll check it out. Anything with creatures and del Toro is a win-win situation.
Sounds sweet, Frankly I had never heard of the original.
