Judd Apatow’s name has become a comedy brand of sorts over the last few years, with mixed results. His directorial efforts have, however, all been very strong and huge box office draws. Since both of these flicks, however, Apatow has produced two misfires: Walk Hard (which is becoming a cult movie as we speak) and Drillbit Taylor (which was a poorly made SuperBad redux). I’m not saying I’ve lost faith in the guy but I’m just really hoping his judgment hasn’t flown completely off kilter. Last night brought news of Apatow’s newest directorial project, which has been known as The Untitled Judd Apatow/Adam Sandler Project.
MTV got the heads up about the plot of the film, which will focus on two stand-up comedians, presumably Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen. Leslie Mann, Apatow’s wife, will of course be thrown into the mix as well. The man does know what side of his bread is buttered.
This whole film intrigues and worries me at the same time. On one hand, all of these guys started out as stand-up comedians, so they know the territory well. Since most comedians are by nature insecure people, I think Apatow’s brand of humor is perfect for the sort of plot I can only imagine the film has (Struggling comedians back stab each other for spotlight, Leslie Mann plays one of their girlfriends, Paul Rudd makes an appearance). But, it’ll have heart damn it!
On the other hand, Sandler’s involvement worries me. See, Apatow used to be roommates with Sandler. They even made an episode of Undeclared together (one of the most underrated TV shows of all time). Sandler, unfortunately, hasn’t made a truly funny movie in about 10 years. And even The Wedding Singer was funny because it was so ingrained in the excess of 80s culture, not because he was starring.
I’m hoping Apatow still has the gift and sees the potential for Sandler in this role that I can’t see. He is, of course, a comedy brand in his own right.
