Now this is some good news for video game fans as well as movie fans. Universal Pictures has signed Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy) to direct and produce an adaptation of Take-Two Interactive’s spectacular video game, BioShock. To add to the news, the film will be based on a screenplay by John Logan (Aviator, Any Given Sunday, Gladiator, The Last Samurai, Sweeney Todd).
For all of you who have no clue what Bioshock is, you are uncool. But in a nutshell, it was a firsts-person game that had you playing a character, who after surviving a plane crash in the ocean, finds an underwater city called Rapture. Unfortunately, the city has fallen into chaos as the seemingly utopian society fell victim to inevitable effects of a power struggle between different factions of the city. Bioshock received great reviews, not only in gameplay but also in the story-telling. Verbinski stated that it was also the Bioshock’s visuals that initially interested him. From the art deco of the architecture, to the memorable characters.
“I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that’s cleverly unveiled to players is just brimming with cinematic potential,” said Verbinski. “Of all the games I’ve played, this is one that I felt has a really strong narrative.”

Wait, let me clarify that.
I FUCKING LOVED BIOSHOCK.
What could have been a standard FPS turned out to be a superb piece of storytelling and beauty. I loved it so much that I even bought it for my PC which was a much better experience.
I think that Verbinski will be a good fit for the film. He’s just artsy enough to get the feel right and I think he’ll have no qualms about keeping the story low key and not turning it into a huge extravaganza.
Would you kindly keep us up to date on this?

May 10, 2008 at 7:20 pm -I’m not sure why Silent Hill has gained the bad rap that it has. I actually enjoyed Silent Hill quite a bit. It’s still, for me at least, the best of the videogame films. It’s dark, unique and gory as hell….everything I had hoped it would have been.

May 10, 2008 at 7:54 pm -I am one of the people who actually liked Silent Hill. It had it’s faults, but a few of the scenes in the film just made it worth watching to me. Also, as one who has played the video games, the movie also made more sense, if you can believe that.
