Variety is reporting that Senator Entertainment is set to produce a movie version of the Capcom survival horror game series, “Clock Tower”, for the Weinstein Co. For you non-gaming people out there, the “Clock Tower” games were created for the Playstation and were in the survival horror genre along with other, more popular titles such as “Resident Evil” and the “Silent Hill” games. The difference with this series and other games in the genre, the series did not have the character you were playing shoot or kill their enemies to survive, but rather had the player use their wits and surroundings to solve puzzles and hide. Personally, I really disliked the games. All three of them.
The movie adaptation is supposed to use the second game in the series, “Clock Tower 2: The Struggle Within” as the backdrop and also happens to be the weakest game of the three. The story surrounds Alyssa Hale, a 17-year-old girl with multiple personality disorder. One of those personalities is an immoral male named Mr. Bates who causes Alyssa to have violent thoughts. An amulet given to her by her father helps keep Mr. Bates at bay, but Alyssa has to use Mr. Bates to help her solve a mystery of a curse, her past and the dissapearance of a family friend. The game was terrible, but for reasons that are usually seen in almost every known franchise, it has a fan base.
Now that’s not saying that a good horror movie couldn’t come out of it, but the article is stating that Senator’s Marco Weber will produce and Martin Weisz (“The Hills Have Eyes 2”) will direct from a script by Eric Poppen (“Borderland”). Come on. That’s one triple-decker of a shit sandwich. The article also contradicts with earlier reports of Eric Valette (”One Missed Call“) directing, a position still listed in it’s IMDB entry. Not that it would make much difference either way, as both Weisz and Valette are interchangeable.
