Maybe not in the movie, but probably at the box office.

The most recent industry tracking has shown some pretty dismal results in regards to this cartoon adaptation. Fantasymoguls.com is reporting that Un-Aided Awareness is stronger for The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, at 9 percent, than it is for Speed Racer which is at 8 percent. Keep in mind that the Narnia sequel won’t hit theaters until May 16.

Caspian also beats Speed Racer in the Definite Interest column scoring 44 percent over Speed Racer’s 32 percent, as well as the First Choice column where Caspian gets 17 percent to Racer’s 4 percent.

The studio is already trying to explain away the numbers by pointing out that there are kids missing from the tracking, but as pointed out in the article, those same kids are missing from the Caspian tracking as well. The prediction is that Speed Racer will not get to $35million opening weekend, and overall will only reach $75 to $80 million.

Forget Un-Aided Awareness, how about Aided Awareness But Not Interested? I initially was pretty psyched to hear Speed was gonna hit the big screen, as I have fond memories of sitting on the couch before school when I was in kindergarten, screaming at my mother to bring me coffee (lots of milk) while I watched Speed Racer. When I saw the trailer, all I could think was, “Where the fuck is this race taking place? In a pinball machine? Is it Speed Racer Meets Sonic the Hedgehog?” Pfft. Oh, well, I’m still pissed off at the Wachowski brothers for Matrix Revolutions anyway.

Without seeing the actual movie, which usually keeps me from commenting on movies as a whole, I have to agree that the visual style of this film is what’s turning me off of it.

I can still watch the original Star Wars trilogy and not be bothered one bit about the hand-made models that were used for the ships and the actual physical effects for the creatures. But all of the trailers I have seen so far show me characters who look really good, surrounded by an absolute OVERLOAD of tacky, Vegas in a pinball machine, fake, crap.

But I am still reserving judgment ’til I actually watch the film, but it is so low on my list I am not sure when that will ever be. The Narnia film? I’ll be there on the 16th.

Well, crap, I tried to post a photo, but it kept disappearing. I need a photo posting primer, I guess.

When I was in grade school I loved Speed Racer. I’m actually looking forward to this but I’ll wait for Netflix.

This movie hurts my eyes. I have no real interest in watching it.
